On the 6th of March 2021 we travelled to a small village called Letcombe Regis, which is about half way between Oxford and Swindon. After we all arrived and got out to the pitch, we realised we were playing on a full size pitch and that the pitch was incredibly uneven which made it hard to control and pass the ball.
The first half was a very scrappy affair with neither side keeping the ball for long periods of time. For the first part of the game, we were definitely dominant holding the ball in their half for long stretches of time and creating a few decent chances which were hard to capitalise on due to the unpredictable nature of the ground. Up until about half way through the first half the opposition only had a few half chances mainly owing to mistakes from us but as the half wore on, they did get back in to the game a bit more and had a few dangerous set pieces. Like us however, they struggled to get shots on target and score any goals.
Both sides came in at half time and the game was almost waiting to be won as it had been an open cagey affair up to that point. The second half got under way and now we had gotten used to the tough conditions we certainly began to play better managing to string passes together and move the ball well. Our first goal came after a period of sustained pressure on the edge of their box before a lovely through ball was played into Jack who managed to slot the ball far post round the keeper to make It 1-0. Despite the goal going in they were still dangerous and they too managed to put their striker through on goal but due to a fabulous save from Massimo the score stayed 1-0 to us. Our second goal came again from a period of pressure in and around their box: the ball got moved out wide to Jacob who from an extremely tight angle managed to loop the ball over the top of everyone to the far side netting making the score 2-0 to us. After this, they came fighting but due to good organisation and defending we held on to the 2-0 win.
Overall, I think it was a good performance for the first game back and a good, result considering they were a dangerous side and we had heartbreakingly lost in the final minutes of a previous game against them. Whether Jacob’s goal was a shot or not we’ll never know but I think it was a fair result and although a scrappy game some good football too. Definitely a nice feeling to win after so long without football.
